Like many of us, BMXer Austin Coleman started out on four wheels. But here’s the difference, while we started out on a bike with training wheels, Coleman’s career began on a skateboard. Loving the freedom skateboarding gave him compared to traditional sports, Coleman didn’t switch to two wheels until one summer when he sprained his ankle. While the injury wasn’t that serious, it did alter the course of his career because while he was injured, his brother gave him his old BMX bike to pedal around on while he was injured.
A BMXer from then on, Coleman nonetheless split his time between his bike and his books. Excelling on the ramps and in the classroom, Coleman accepted a full academic scholarship to the University of Southern California during his senior year of high school. Though he continued to travel and compete in BMX competitions, he was still a member of the Black Business Student Association, graduating from USC in the spring of 2006 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Policy Planning, Management, and Development, with a Minor in Business Administration.
With his diploma hanging on his wall, Coleman turned to BMX full time with solid results. Named one of Ride Magazine’s top 10 riders to watch in 2003, Coleman finished 10th in the year-end Dew Cup park standings in ’06. Hampered by injuries throughout the 2007 Tour, Coleman added BMX vert to his repertoire, making his first vert final midway through the season. Since then, Coleman has made strides in both park and vert – moving up in the year-end standings in both disciplines.
A resident of Protown, USA, Coleman owns a pair of houses in Greenville, N.C. – one for him and one for his friends and anyone passing through town.
