He was already signed to the Geico Powersports Honda team and his first race was Millville. Wharton stunned everyone by running up front and finishing fifth overall in his first try. For a rookie to step in and compete with more experienced riders that late in the season is no easy task and Wharton proved that he will be a threat to win races in 2009.
“Pro racing is different,” Wharton says. “The motos are longer and the competition is harder but you have to race it to get that experience. You can’t duplicate it on your own. I’m looking forward to riding supercross because I know that will be even more different. Right now, it looks like I will ride the east coast series, but that could change.”
