After watching Chad Bartie ride a skateboard, you could be forgiven for thinking he probably sleeps on a bed of nails, eats glass for breakfast and washes it down with a goblet of his own blood. But the reality might be crazier still. It turns out that Chad is actually obsessed with yoga, views skateboarding through the eyes of a Buddhist monk, and dishes out more healthy living advice than Oprah.
Chad grew up on Australia’s Gold Coast where he learned to surf and spent a lot of time hanging out at the family bike shop. When he was 8 his dad ordered some skateboards for the shop and in case you couldn’t guess, he sort of got into skating.
In 1997, having already lined up a solid batch of sponsors while still living in Oz, Chad moved stateside to skate full time. In the years since, besides doing the requisite demo tours, video parts and contests, he’s established himself as a master of mixing it up. Whether it’s his hair [which has yoyo’d from a blonde buzz cut to a black mullet], his clothing, his choice of terrain [street, bowls, mini ramp, what have you], or his contest lines, he always has a surprise in store.
Chad’s results on the contest circuit just don’t always do justice to the hurting he puts on the course, but two X Games bronze medals six years apart (‘03 and ’09), in two different disciplines (street and superpark) isn’t anything to scoff at either. In addition to being one of the Dew Tour’s O-est of G’s, Chad is also a co-owner of Kewday Skateboards along with his brother Jamie. He’s a busy man, but he handles it well, and that’s why they call him Bar-Chi.
