Beginning any athletic pursuit at a young age has one huge advantage: it's a natural thing, nothing is forced and an innate sense of feel or "touch" is developed. That can be said to describe Drake McElroy, who got his first Y-Zinger on his first birthday with a set of training wheels. When he was three years old, McElroy learned to ride it with out them, and by the age of four, he was racing.
Although his family didn't have deep pockets while he was growing up, they supported him all the way. Racing locally up until July 2000, McElroy soon earned enough points to ride pro, though he still struggled to get the money to compete in Lorretta's and World Mini.
Despite all this, Drake found his niche in freestyle in August 2000. He rode in an SFX event in AZ and made enough cash to ride his bike and just have fun. A week later he qualified as the first alternate for the Vans Triple Crown Series.
Most of his time and energy was now focused on freestyle, still throwing in track sessions here and there. By the start of 2001, he had a sponsor for almost everything and was riding in demos with the likes of Nate Adams and Brian Deegan.
