As a pro snowboarder who doesn’t reside in the mountains or at a ski resort, Kelly Marren is, in many ways, the exception to the rule when it comes to the sport.
Growing up on the outskirts of San Francisco, her first national competition happened to be in gymnastics. However, Marren quickly grew addicted to the feeling of flipping and flying above the bars and beam, and the foundation for her snowboarding career was inadvertently laid.
After winning the halfpipe contest and taking fourth in slopestyle at the USASA Nationals in 2007, Marren was invited to join the All-American Team and travelled with them to Switzerland. There, she won the Swiss Nationals U16 competition and solidified herself as a consistent contender.
Adding backside methods, backside 5’s, 7’s, and 9’s to her repertoire for ’08, Marren made her Winter X Games debut in 2010 and finished second overall on the Dew Tour.
A self-proclaimed nerd, Marren has the act of balancing snowboarding and school down to a science. She began attending Stanford University in 2009 and her favorite subjects are physics, math and Spanish.
