Neal Hendrix grew up in a place called Lewisville, North Carolina. So there’s only one thing you should find more surprising than his becoming a professional vert skater. That would be his failure to become a professional NASCAR driver. Not that he ever really tried, but still, you should see him on a go-cart track.
As a young wall jammer, Neal got lucky in 1990 when Eastern Vert Skatepark opened the next town over. With a proper vert ramp on which to hone his skills, by early ‘91 Neal had gone from a snot-nosed beginner to a budding pro for New Deal skateboards.
Neal owes his longevity as a competitive professional to some serious talent and a workhorse’s approach to the pipe. His contest history is a testament to those qualities, with one result in particular standing out: A second place finish at the first ever X Games back in 1995. As you may or may not remember, Tony Hawk happened to win that one, and to this day Neal jokes that if he’d edged out Hawk it might be him with a video game and box seats to everything. He’s joking.
But either way, Neal is still a top-ten contender on the Dew Tour today. He’s also one of the most traveled skateboarders in history: Moscow, Shanghai, Rio, Zanzibar, Neal has skated them all and has an amazing photo collection to prove it. In his spare time Neal is the skate correspondent for The Weekly Update on Fuel TV, and also works as the brand manager for Woodward Skate Camps. These days he lives in Orange County, California, but no matter how far he’s come since his days in Lewisville, he’ll always be Hee Haw at heart.
