Known for innovation and his technical skills, Rob Darden was the first dirt rider to crank a barspin into a tailwhip and in park, he was the first rider to pull a tailwhip to grind. Taking risks and hitting huge tricks, Darden’s reputation has only been growing in the BMX community.
Two years after graduating from high school, Rob moved across the country from his NorCal home to Greenville, N.C. However, after disappointing finishes in 2006 and ’07, Darden rededicated himself to the sport of BMX in the off-season, changing his diet and training regimen to get back into shape. Darden’s changes made an impression in the BMX world and he entered 2008 with a new look and a new attitude about riding. The change showed immediately when Darden finished on the BMX park podium at the second and third stops of the ‘08 Dew Tour.
The back-to-back third-place performances pushed Darden to fourth place overall in the year-end park standings; he also finished in the top 10 in the Dew Tour dirt rankings, closing out the season in eighth. In a year of personal bests in ’08, Darden also earned his first X Games medal, a bronze in the park competition. Darden also pushed the envelope in BMX dirt, recording a fourth place at Simpel Session as well as a personal best with a fifth-place showing in the year-end 2009 Dew Tour standings.
Guess cooking your own chicken when you’re on the road for competitions really pays off.
