Competing in his first event just two years after jumping on a board, Kotsenburg entered the US Snowboard Series when he was eight and won every event he entered for the next four years. He got his first taste of prize money at the age of 11 – taking third at the Peanut Butter and Rail Jam 15 & Under Finals – and he made his debut on the US Open slopestyle course at the age of 12.
With a passion for big jumps, Kotsenburg has taken the slopestyle scene by storm in the past few years with top-10 finishes on both the ‘08 and ’09 Grand Prix circuit as well as the ‘09 Burton Canadian Open. But with a Dew Cup, a fifth-place showing at X Games and a silver medal from X Games Europe in the 2009-10 competition season, it’s clear that Kotsenburg is just getting warmed up.
Kotsenburg rides with other up-and-coming talents Sam Hulbert, Tyler Flanagan and Eric Willett in the slopestyle world on a regular basis. But he actually prefers to ride by himself most days because he can train at his own pace and try new tricks over and over again.
