Paul Zitzer Retrospective: The Great White Hype

The biggest story of the weekend, by far, was the match-up on the pipe between tech junkie PLG and snow god Shaun White. After their one-two finish last month at the X Games, this event should have been considered just another showdown between greats, a “may the best man win” type of thing.

Shaun White, the crazy red head, burst onto the skateboard scene in 1999 and hasn't looked back since. Although renowned for his work on the slopes with a total of seven Winter X Games titles in snowboarding, White is also a well-respected skateboarder. White established himself as a threat on the vert ramps in 2005 when he won the first-ever Dew Tour stop. However, he ended the season ranked ninth in the Dew Cup standings. On the 2007 Dew Tour, Shaun captured three consecutive wins, as well as his first X Games gold on the vert ramp, and he went home with the 2007 Dew Cup.

With help from his 2006 and 2010 Olympic gold medals for snowboarding, Shaun White has become one of the most recognizable athletes in the world. He's appeared on numerous talk shows, and on covers of the most popular magazines. He has his own video game and is the star of several commercials. In 2006, White was named the Rider of the Year in both TransWorld Snowboarding and TransWorld Skateboarding magazine.
