Alli Checks In with Drew Bezanson

Drew Bezanson started off 2010 on a contest-winning tear after racking up first place at Simpel Session in Estonia, the Toronto BMX Jam and the JoMo Pro. He was so on point that people even started calling it Drew-thousand-ten. Unfortunately, a few months before the summer contest season really got started he seperated his shoulder, and has been nursing the injury ever since. Alli caught up with him during a break in the prelims at the Nike 6.0 BMX Open, and he shared his plans for the season ahead.

You were on a contest tear for 2010, did things just click this year?
I started off this year with a great season. I just didn’t put any pressure on myself. I did what I wanted to do, had fun with it, and it was working. I was having a blast and I just had the confidence.

First three contests of the year I ended up winning, and a couple months before the Dew Tour I separated my shoulder and it just went downhill from there. Right now I’m just trying to do what I can, just have fun and still do what I can with my shoulder.

How did you injure yourself?
I separated my shoulder while riding street. I was actually trying to do a bump jump flip and it didn’t work. I landed upside down and I shoulder-checked the ground. I did that in May, and then I stayed on the road and then went on road trips.

I was trying to do rehab while on road trips, and it just wasn’t working. So I went home for a bit and then started doing my rehab like crazy. And then I started to ride again and then fell on it again two days before coming to Dew Tour. It’s just wasn’t meant to be this year, I guess.

Do you need surgery now, or just some time to heal?
It just needs the time to heal, pretty much. But we’re right in the middle of the season and every weekend there’s a big contest.

So I’m just going to do what I can for the next two weeks, and then probably head home again and just get it fixed and get it dealt with. Just a lot of strengthening and stuff, and some off-time.
