The up and coming BMX talent was evident at the first stop of Gatorade Free Flow Tour and it only sets the stage for an insane season to come. The young ams are hungry to make an impression, and the lineup of parks scheduled throughout the summer is their proving grounds.
The Tour’s opening weekend May 22 at New Hampshire’s Rye Airfield put all this talent on display. Flowing through the course with confidence and consistency was leading am and event winner Josh Lane, who knows how to bust big tricks. He barely edged out another young ripper, Matt Ray, who finished second with a 720, a double whip, and a 3 whip.

Dew Tour quality tricks went down in NH and if the Gatorade Free Flow Tour follows in the footsteps of the pro circuit, these guys will be forced to outdo themselves from one stop to the next as more riders come onto the scene. At Rye Airfield, Josh’s Superman to whip on the big box included his own backwards twist on things when he launched off the landing and finished on the takeoff.
Tech tricks will get the attention of the judges as well, and the skillful Brett Silva, who placed third, is an indicator of that. In Rye, it was actually the entire top five guys who pulled from a bag of tricks you’d expect to see from the pros. Fourth-place-finisher Seth Beaton did a huge 360, a 3 turndown, and a Superman seat grab and Dave Czaja, in fifth, pulled back to back whips, a barrel roll, and a flip whip.
With today’s generation of riders, even a few weeks of practice can raise the bar in time for the next competition. We’ll have our sights set on the next event to measure just how far that bar will be raised when the Gatorade Free Flow Tour travels to Da Compound in Perris, CA on June 12 for BMX park and dirt competitions. Then just two weeks later a BMX park contest will go down at Woodward in Denver on June 27. The next couple stops of the Tour are listed below, along with full results from the first stop of the 2010 season. Check back in with Alli for more event recaps and photos.
