Last week, Eli Tomac handed the 250SX West Region points lead over to Ken Roczen by crashing. Tomac avoided those errors at the latest race in Anaheim, but it was his start that did him in when the gates dropped for the Main Event.
Roczen got off to a good start in the Main, chasing down holeshot winner and Supercross rookie Joey Savatgy on the race's first lap to take over the lead. Roczen went on to lead all 15 laps in the race to take the checkered flag for the second week in a row and increase his hold on the points lead.
Martin Davalos gave it his best effort, taking over 2nd on Lap 2 and then turning in some of the race's fastest laps. The Monster Energy Kawasaki rider cut Roczen's lead to 1.3 seconds midway through the race, but fell off the pace as things continued and had to settle for the runner-up spot. Still, it was a solid night for Davalos, who won his heat race and turned in his best Main Event finish of the season. Mitch Payton clearly wasn't happy with his team's performance after Oakland, but Davalos responded to the challenge tonight.
Tomac found himself in the middle of the pack as the race started and was forced to make a run through the field. The defending champion made some great passes to get himself up to 3rd, but by that time was too far behind Roczen and Davalos to improve his position any further.
One rider who impressed tonight was rookie Joey Savatagy. After finishing 2nd to Tomac in his heat, he came out in the Main Event and grabbed the holeshot. He fell back to 3rd in the Main, but held his own for awhile against Tomac's challenge on Lap 8. He went on to finish the race in 7th.
At the other end of the spectrum was Cole Seely, who finished off the podium for the first time. Riding pink graphics as a nod to breast cancer awareness, the Lucas Oil/Troy Lee Designs/Honda rider sat as high as 5th, but a mistake 7 laps into the race sent him back through the pack, where he finished 12th. He falls from 2nd to 3rd in the points as a result.
