We caught up with Lucas Oil/Troy Lee Designs/Honda’s Wil Hahn to have him explain his two half-sleeves for this installment of Under The Gun.
“This one is probably the one that is most confusing for people to look at," Hahn said.
"It has part of the Texas flag on it since I’m from both Texas and Kansas, while the whole top section is about Kansas with the Flint hills and the sunflower."
"Ad Astra Per Aspera is on the Kansas flag, and in Latin it means, ‘Difficulty to reach the stars.’ " For some reason that’s on the Kansas flag, and I thought it was really cool—it fit me.”
His other half sleeve is just as intricate, and the meaning is tied to his family and his rural upbringing.
“This one starts with my Grandpa’s initials up top," Hahn said. "He passed away at Lorreta Lynn’s back in 1999 when we were racing there. I’ve always wanted to do something for him."
"Then the other one is the standard Mom tattoo that people get. Lastly is my dad flying his plane, and at the very bottom there is a tractor going through a cornfield because we grew up farming.”
