RedBud Recap

See photo recap from Rebud

RedBud has long been a staple on the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship tour, and it traditionally falls on Independence Day Weekend. Today, unlike many of the races this year, Americans actually won both classes, too.

In the 450cc class, the second moto of which was live on NBC, JGR/Toyota Yamaha’s Josh Grant had a career day. Starting the first moto near the end of the top 10, Grant started working his way through the traffic quickly and actually sat third by the end of the second lap. From there, he caught Honda Red Bull Racing’s Andrew Short, who had lost the lead back to Rockstar/Makita Suzuki’s Chad Reed.

After passing Short with only two laps to go, Grant set out after Reed and nearly caught the Suzuki rider by the finish.

In the second moto, though, Grant started closer to the front, passing Reed for third on the first lap, then quickly passing Short and then his teammate Ivan Tedesco within a few laps. From there, Grant pulled away to a commanding lead, while Reed worked his way by Short and got to work on Tedesco. At the finish, Reed and Tedesco were nearly a dead heat, with Tedesco getting the nod, but Grant was the winner going away.

With a 2-1 score, Grant scored his first-ever 450cc National victory, although Reed extended his points lead to 21 with his second overall.

In the 250cc class, coming off of his first-ever outdoor victory in Colorado only a week ago, Monster Energy/Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Jake Weimer took the holeshot in the first moto at RedBud, but lost the lead to Rockstar/Makita Suzuki’s Ryan Dungey on the second lap. Weimer chased Dungey for the duration of the race, but couldn’t get close enough to strike.

Dungey took the win over Weimer, GEICO Powersports Honda teammates Justin Barcia and Brett Metcalfe, and Muscle Milk KTM’s Tommy Searle.

Searle’s teammate Martin Davalos got the holeshot in moto two and actually led the first five laps of the event over Weimer’s teammate Christophe Pourcel, who went down in the first turn in the first moto and finished eighth that time out.

Pourcel took over the lead on lap six and Searle followed him through for second, followed soon thereafter by Metcalfe and Weimer. That’s how the moto finished out, too.

Pourcel took the win over Searle, Metcalfe, Weimer and Davalos. Weimer took the overall with a 2-4 score over Pourcel’s 8-1 and Searle’s 5-2. Actually, as far as the points were concerned, second through fifth were all tied on points for the day with 38. Fourth went to Metcalfe and fifth to Dungey.

Gday from Australia. This is a fantastic free service, to watch AMA motocross live in OZ is unbelievable! I have been around motocross since i was 13 yrs old (now 43) and watched era's which featured Hanna, Jonny O,Baily, JMB, Laroco, Mcgrath the GOAT and now this current one and I goota say this is on par with all of those. Man 3 ozzies running in the top three in the 450 class at certain motos, My good friend Brett Metcalfe firing after injury in the 250 class and the depth of riders is unbelievable.
Good hosts just the right amount of humour and knowledge keep it up and keep it free.

Cheers
