2011 Dew Cup Champions

The 2011 season of the Dew Tour came to a close with the final event, the Dew Tour Championships presented by GoDaddy.com at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. In the end, the Dew Cups were awarded to the top-ranked athlete and overall points leader in each of the Tour’s five disciplines.

An intense skate street final ended with 25-year-old Canadian Ryan Decenzo topping the podium. Edging out his two closest competitors, Paul Rodriguez and Greg Lutzka who finished second and third in the overall points race, Decenzo commanded the street course and solidified his path to become the Dew Cup champion. 16-year-old Alec Majerus put on a very impressive second-place performance to end his season fourth in overall points.

Alec Majerus, Ryan Decenzo and Greg Lutzka

The BMX Park finals saw more jaw-dropping tricks and lead changes than any previous competition of the season. Scotty Cranmer, Dennis Enarson, Kyle Baldock, Brett Banasiewicz and Daniel Dhers all unleashed their strongest runs in hopes of topping the podium. However, it was Scotty Cranmer who was able to narrowly defeat the competition after ending his run with a massive corked 720 step down.

BMX Dirt finals at the Dew Tour Championships was an all-out gauntlet of progressive tricks. Kyle Baldock, Brett Banasiewicz, Ben Wallace and Dennis Enarson pulled out all the stops, throwing down some of the biggest tricks of the season. When the dust settled, it was the breakout Australian, Kyle Baldock who took first place. Ben Wallace and Brett Banasiewicz were close behind, claiming the second and third spots respectively. Despite his fourth place finish, Dennis Enarson ended the season as the overall points leader, making him the Dew Cup champion for BMX Dirt.

Dennis Enarson - 2011 BMX Dirt Dew Cup Champion

Going into the BMX Vert finals, it was clear many riders were prepared to leave everything they had out on the vert ramp. Doing so would be more than necessary if they wanted to keep up with six-time Dew Cup champion, Jamie Bestwick. Vince Byron, the 21-year-old Australian, cemented his position at the top of the podium by landing a 540 Doublewhip at the end of his first superfinal run. After a horrifying crash on his first and second runs of the superfinal, Steve McCann was able to recover admirably, landing a no-handed 900 in his final run and earning a second place finish. However, it was legendary rider, Jamie Bestwick, who came away with the overall victory. Finishing third for the day but first in overall points for the season, Bestwick won his seventh straight Dew Cup.

The final competition of the Dew Tour Championships, Skateboard Vert, was an action packed event as Pierre-Luc Gagnon, Shaun White and Bucky Lasek battled for the lead. Canadian PLG ended his final run, landing a switch heelflip 360, straight into a nollie heelflip into a nollie heelflip 360 to emerge victorious over White and Lasek. With his victory, PLG ended a successful season in the top position and took home his third Dew Cup.

PLG and Shaun White

The Canadian invasion of skateboarding continued as Ryan Decenzo and Pierre Luc-Gagnon tied for Toyota's Athlete of the Year award, which honors the athlete with the most overall points in a single discipline.

After an incredible season that any veteran rider would be proud of, Kyle Baldock was awarded the Ball Park Rookie of the Year for BMX. Meanwhile, Manny Santiago was awarded the Ball Park Rookie of the Year for skateboarding. In his first year competing on the Dew Tour, Manny brought relentless tricks, consistent performance and a wealth of smiles to each stop of the tour.

Scotty Cranmer was awarded with the PowerBar Performance of the Year for his incredible performance in the BMX Park finals at the Dew Tour Championships. Scotty's run included a backflip double tailwhip and a step down corked 720.

BMX Vert rider Vince Byron not only left Las Vegas with a first place finish in BMX Vert but also with Paul Mitchell's Breakthrough Athlete of the Year award. This award is given to the athlete that continually surpassed expectations throughout the 2011 season.

Pantech awarded Bucky Lasek and Dennis Enarson with their Crossover Award, given for their outstanding performance in more than one discipline. Lasek took first place in Skate Vert at the Pantech Open, first in Skate Bowl at the Portland Invitational, and third in Skate Vert at both the Toyota Challenge and the Dew Tour Championships. Dennis Enarson finished second in BMX Park at the Pantech Open, first in BMX Dirt at the Portland Invitational and Toyota Challenge, and second in BMX Park at the Dew Tour Championships.

Dennis Enarson claimed the PlayStation Pro Moment award for his curved wallride to 270 alleyoop tailwhip in the BMX Park competition. Athletes are nominated throughout the 2011 season and the award is given to the nominated athlete who performed the best trick during the Dew Tour Championships in Las Vegas.

It came down to the last runs of the Superfinal to decide it all in the skate vert battle at the Dew Tour Championships. Defending Dew Cup champ Pierre-Luc Gagnon walked away with the win and his third Dew Cup after putting together lines full of combos and difficulty no one could match.

Check out PLG's second run of the Superfinal

“I’ve been on a roll for the past four contests,” Gagnon said. “After I won Dew Tour in Salt Lake City I went to Europe and South Africa and I won both those events. So I was like, ‘Let’s just keep it rolling, keep it going.’”

It also came down to who could actually stay on their board and put together their run. After landing a frontside bluntslide during finals, Bucky was trying a nollie kickflip stalefish 360, and if he’d pulled it off the outcome could have been much different.

“It was like a battle all year and there wasn’t any major lead from anyone,” Gagnon said. “Especially since Bucky was right behind me by eight points. I skated with him all last week and I saw the run he was trying, and if he would have pulled that, it would have been close.”

Shaun White pulled it together in his third run of the superfinal with a run that included fakie-to-fakie 540s, a 720, a body varial frontside rodeo and ended with his signature armadillo. He finished second with 91.50 to PLG’s 92.00. Lasek finished third with 88.50.

PLG's win also made it a Canadian sweep on the skate side of things at the Dew Tour, with fellow Canuck's Ryan Decenzo winning street and Jordan Hoffart taking first in Best Trick.

Twenty-one-year-old Vince Byron unveiled his 540 double tailwhip at the start of the Dew Tour season, and the trick helped him nab his first win in today's BMX vert finals.

“It was magical and I was not expecting it, that’s for sure,” Byron said. “I think a lot of people are used to Jamie being up there.”

Byron’s winning run started with a straight air into a barspin to tuck no-hander, double tailwhip, opposite air downside tailwhip, flair whip, 540 tuck no-hander, back into opposite flair, tobaggan and he finished with 540 double tailwhip. His score of 91.50 held on for the win.

Check out Vince's First Run of the Superfinals

“I think more and more people are coming into vert, so Jamie’s reign may not last forever,” Byron said. “But who knows, he may step his game up. You never know.”

The real battle of the day was between Jamie Bestwick and Steven McCann, ranked first and second coming into the Championships. It was the first time in Dew Tour history that Bestwick’s hold on the Dew Cup was in jeopardy. After McCann won the last event, a win in Vegas would give him the Dew Cup. But the same held true for Bestwick.

After advancing to the Superfinal, Steven McCann went down hard on his first run and knocked himself out, creating even more drama. But he came back in his next run and landed his no-handed 900 at the buzzer to boost his score. He had one more run to go, but he wasn’t able to pull together the run he had in mind and finished second with 90.75.

Steve McCann

“My last run I bobbled,” McCann said. “The air before I was supposed to triple whip I hung up and I knew there was no way I was going to triple whip out of that air. It kind of caught me off guard and I was trying to make up the walls into a new run, but I kind of lost my way a little.”

Bestwick still had a run left to make it up, but he went down trying a technical and difficult double flair.

“I just wanted to get one solid run under my belt and all I was concentrating on was that double flair,” Bestwick said. “I came up about 18 inches short in what I needed to on the setup air.”

Jamie Bestwick

He finished third with 90.25, but he earned enough points to get the seventh Dew Cup of his career, crushing McCann’s hopes.

“I won my seventh Dew Cup in a row and everybody wished for me to fall off in this arena today,” Bestwick said. “There were so many people here hoping that Steve McCann would break my legacy and I could see that a lot of hearts were broken. But you know what, that’s the kind of rider I am. If you hold on to six Dew Cups you can ride under pressure, and that’s what happened today. I got the job done. I hope the McCann fans weren’t too bummed out, but I’m one tough old fart and you ain’t moving me out of the way that easy.”

In his first season of riding dirt, Kyle Baldock came back from seventh place in his last run to take home the win at the Dew Tour Championships.

He stacked his final run with tricks, even beginning with a barspin drop in, and it won over the judges to score a 91.25 overall average.

Check out Baldock's run

“This stop I had a hard run this morning, crashed and got hurt pretty bad,” Baldock said. “But all my sponsors helped out today, got my shoulder massaged, and then I had to come out and do it again. I ended up coming in first, and I didn’t think that would happen at all. To win is crazy.”

Ben Wallace took over the lead after a perfect first run with a 360 double downside tailwhip, but he got the wind knocked out after a nasty fall on his second run. But he brushed himself off and came back with a final run that ended with a triple tailwhip and earned him second place with an overall score of 90.01.

Brett Banasiewicz threw down massive front flips throughout his runs, and a cash roll to finish off his final run. He was favored to win the Dew Cup, but really needed a win to pull it off and he finished third with 89.25.

Dennis Enarson has been competing on the Dew Tour for five years, since he was 16-year-old grom, and this season he took home the Dew Cup in dirt.

“For a while I didn’t think I’d ever get the Dew Cup, I was just hanging out in 10th place,” Enarson said. “But this year it just happened to work out and it’s insane.”

Enarson is a threat in both dirt and park, and he competed back-to-back in both finals today. This is his first Dew Cup, and he finished the competition in fourth after having some trouble on his first two runs.

“Dirt is such a crazy discipline where different people win every time, and to average out in first for the whole year is insane.”

Injuries are clearly a thing of the past for Scotty Cranmer, who showed he's back in top form at today's BMX Park Finals. After battling injuries in past seasons, he came back in his final run to take the Dew Tour Championships win and secured the first Dew Cup of his career.

With double back flips over the box from both Kyle Baldock and Andy Buckworth, the guys were setting the bar high after each run. There were huge transfers to wallrides from Dennis Enarson, a cashroll over the box from Brett Banasiewicz and explosive riding from Mark Webb.

Defending Dew Cup champ Dhers did a 720 bomb drop to start and took the lead after his first run. Enarson followed with a wallride to opposite tailwhip back to tie score with Dhers.

Cranmer was next up for his first run, with a huge transfer to start. He landed a flip double tailwhip down the step down later in the run but fell at the buzzer and didn’t score well.

That left it up the second run for Cranmer to redeem himself, where he came back with the insane run below to score 92.13 and take the win.

“Ever since my foot injury, I’ve been having a rough time. It threw me off with nine months off my bike. Truthfully, I thought the Dew Cup was out of my reach. That’s because I was never that consistent of a rider. I just didn’t have faith in myself. Over the last year and a half I’ve discovered what I rode for. I found myself on my bike and off my bike. I’ve never been happier, I’ve never been more positive and I’m so grateful for this Dew Cup. It’s unbelievable.

The same was true for switch master Paul Rodriguez.

Skateboard Street Final Highlights

Ryan Decenzo came into the Dew Tour Championships ranked first overall and a win in Vegas guaranteed him a Dew Cup. The same was true for switch master Paul Rodriguez.

Then the skate street finals delivered a surprise ending when the top six skaters advanced to the final jam. Missing from that jam was P-Rod, who came to the event ranked second overall. He started off the finals with solid switch moves and tech tricks on the rails, but wasn’t able to advance to the jam.

But there were two Gatorade Free Flow Tour winners who made it into the mix. Seventeen-year-old Brendon Villanueva earned his way through the GFFT ranks with an overall win this season, and he was granted a spot to compete against the pros on the Dew Tour. With a kickflip to flat down the steps right at the buzzer of his intro run, he was skating solid right from the start.

“What I was told by a bunch of pros is that ams are more hungry that pros because they want to make it to that point as well,” Brendon said.

He’s following in the footsteps of last year’s Gatorade Free Flow Tour winner Alec Majerus, who also advanced to the final jam. With a frontside feeble on the rail, frontside noseblunt slide and smooth style, it earned him his first Dew Tour podium with a score of 85.13 and a second-place-finish. The 16-year-old from Minnesota has made it into every final this season.

Also in Dew Cup contention here in Vegas was Greg Lutzka, who advanced to the final jam along with Ryan, Ryan’s brother Scott and Brazilian Danilo do Rosario.

Lutzka was skating well with a 270 to switch front blunt and a frontside flip to flat, and he finished third with 84.25 on the course built inside The Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino.

That left the door open for Ryan, who showed cool calm from his intro run straight through to the final jam. His nollie backside heelflip down the stairs was just one in a list of solid tricks that earned him the win and the Dew Cup. He finished with a score of 90.28.

“The first time I ever competed on the Dew Tour it was obviously a dream and a goal to make it to this point, and I did, so I’m super proud of myself,” Ryan said.

The Dew Tour Championships presented by GoDaddy.com will take over Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas October 13-16. The four day action sports event culminates a season-long tour in which the top athletes in skate street and vert, and BMX park, dirt and vert will be awarded the Dew Cup. The weekend will also feature a freestyle motocross Hart & Huntington Best Whip contest and a 50 Cent concert in The Joint.

Ryan Decenzo and Paul Rodriguez have each earned a first place podium finish this year, positioning them to make a run for the overall win of the skate street Dew Cup. Manny Santiago and Greg Lutzka, strong contenders throughout the season, will not make it easy for those in the top spot. Each skater will bring their own style to the course, designed specifically for the last stop of the season. Combined for the night in famed concert venue The Joint, the Street Skate Final will be followed by a 50 Cent concert, making for a unique Las Vegas skate street contest experience.

Sunday, October 16 will see the action focused at the vert ramp set up over Hard Rock Hotel’s Beach Club pool. The skate vert standings find Pierre-Luc Gagnon in first place following his win in Salt Lake City, with vert legend Bucky Lasek closely trailing behind in second. Shaun White will aim to bring his gold standard to the Championship competition, with the anticipation of a possible new trick. BMX vert features a close race between six-time Dew Cup champion Jamie Bestwick and Steve McCann, who upset Bestwick’s winning streak when he pulled out a win in Salt Lake City with a no-handed 900.

BMX park and dirt competitions are stacked with rising young stars and breakout rookies. Kyle Baldock, in his first year on the Dew Tour, came through Qualifiers in Ocean City to take the first place win in park, blowing open his lead for the Dew Cup after placing second in Portland, where he fell short to contender Scotty Cranmer. The BMX dirt course, designed by Las Vegas local TJ Lavin, will be home to another heated competition in Vegas. Dennis Enarson has been a strong Dew Tour competitor since turning pro in 2007, but has yet to earn his Dew Cup. He will look to hold his current standing in first place over 17-year-old phenom Brett Banasiewicz, who wowed the crowd on the technical and challenging course in Salt Lake City.

Hart & Huntington will be partnering with the Dew Tour once again to bring freestyle motocross to the Dew Tour Championships in Las Vegas. Led by FMX legend and Vegas local Carey Hart, the Best Whip contest will feature some of the biggest names in motocross, including Ronnie Renner, Beau Bamburg and Todd Potter. Crowds will watch as the riders showcase their best moves set against the Vegas skyline.

In his third year competing on Dew Tour, Canadian street skater Ryan Decenzo heads into the Dew Tour Championships with the overall lead. He’s trailed by Paul Rodriguez, and either guy can take home the Cup with a win in Vegas.

Concrete street courses made for some heated competition on the Dew Tour this season. P-Rod earned the first street win of the season in Portland while Decenzo took second. Next up was Salt Lake City, where Decenzo won and P-Rod finished in third.

“I started off really rough so I’m happy that I was able to fight my way up and get onto the podium and still keep myself in the race for the Dew Cup,” Rodriguez said after Salt Lake. “I definitely have some work to do but I’m still in a position where it’s possible.”

Paul Rodriguez - Skate Street Finals, Toyota Challenge 2011

For the event in Las Vegas, the concrete will be poured inside the Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino.

“I’m pumped for Vegas to see what the course looks like,” Decenzo said after Salt Lake. “This was an awesome setup here so I’m just pumped to skate there and watch everybody else skate.”

Course designs have been released and the layout is so sectional that it will become a battle of consistency and technical abilities on rails and hubbas. To see who walks away with the Cup, tickets are available to check out the skate street finals Friday night, followed by a 50 Cent concert included in the ticket price.

BMX Dirt Final Highlights - Portland Invitational 2011

At next week’s Dew Tour Championships in Vegas, there’s Dew Cups up for grabs in BMX dirt and park, but one guy could take them both.

With the way they’ve been riding all season, chances are Dennis Enarson, Brett Banasiewicz or Kyle Baldock could walk away with a Cup in each hand.

Dennis Enarson has the best shot at making that a reality. As one of the least competitive guys out there, his natural abilities and positive attitude always land him on the podium.

“I’m psyched to be in top three because I don’t have to make finals,” Enarson said. “I get to relax. I can chill at the pool in Vegas.”

Dennis Enarson - BMX Park Finals

After a win in dirt to start off the season followed by second-place in Salt Lake, he’s leading the dirt charge and would win the Cup if he finishes either first or second in Vegas. In park rankings, he’s third overall and a win in Vegas would make him the park champ as long as Kyle Baldock finishes third at best.

Baldock, the Dew Tour rookie, has the slimmest chance of taking home the dirt Cup, but he’s the biggest contender in park. He’ll be the new park Champ if he finishes first or second in Vegas. At the start of the season, he was a relative unknown on the Dew Tour scene looking to make it through Open Qualifiers in park. Then he ended up winning the whole event.

Kyle Baldock - Double Backflip - BMX Dirt Finals

BMX Park Final Highlights - Pantech Open 2011

“I came in just to qualify for the year, that’s all I wanted to do,” Baldock said at the Pantech Open in July. “And to come here and come first in qualifiers, I couldn’t say anything. And to come in to finals and not have any expectations and to win it again, is crazy!”

His explosive riding carries over to dirt, where he throws down double back flips like they’re going out of style. He placed second in Portland, but didn’t podium in Salt Lake so it’s more of a long shot with dirt. But Baldock could take home the dirt Cup with a win and some poor results from his competitors Brandon Dosch, Enarson and Brett Banasiewicz.

Brett Banasiewicz - Cash Roll - BMX Dirt Finals

Banasiewicz narrowly missed the dirt Dew Cup last season after unleashing his cash roll and riding heads above the rest of the guys for most of the year. But by the end of the 2010 Tour he finished second to Dosch after their own battle in Vegas.

This year, the 16-year-old from Indiana is trailing Enarson in the dirt standings. Banasiewicz can take home the dirt Cup with a win in Vegas as long as Enarson finishes third or lower. For park, the Cup is his with a win as long as Enarson and Scotty Cranmer finish third or worse, and Baldock is no better than sixth.

After building his own skatepark this year, there’s no telling what Banasiewicz can unleash in Vegas, so anything is possible.

<![CDATA[PLG, Bucky and Shaun White Battling for Skate Vert Dew Cup]]> http://allisports.com/dew-tour/news/plg-bucky-and-shaun-white-battling-for-skate-vert-dew-cup The Dew Tour’s skate vert ramp has seen its share of battles over the years, but this season’s Dew Cup title is a toss-up between the only three guys who have ever won the Cup

The Dew Tour’s skate vert ramp has seen its share of battles over the years, but this season’s Dew Cup title is a toss-up between the only three guys who have ever won the Cup.

Defending Dew Cup champ Pierre-Luc Gagnon has the biggest overall season lead with 190 points going into the Dew Tour Championships. If he wins, the Cup is his for the third time.

PLG - Skateboard Vert Finals - Pantech Open 2011

But the same applies to three-time champ Bucky Lasek, who’s just a few points behind with 182. He needs the win to collect his fourth Cup. If things had gone as planned at last month’s Toyota Challenge, Bucky would have a bigger lead.

“I just fell short on one last trick before I was going to bring my last three tricks that were new and technical,” he said after finishing third in Salt Lake.

So keep an eye out in Vegas for Bucky to unleash his frontside nollie flip stalefish 360, and everything else he’s been saving in his bag of tricks.

Bucky Lasek - Skateboard Vert Finals - Toyota Challenge 2011

Also in the mix with 172 points is Shaun White, who collected his first and only vert Cup in 2007. In order to secure the Cup this year, he needs to win in Vegas and PLG must finish third or lower.

“I’m not out here to beat Shaun, I want to win,” Gagnon said. “Whether he gets second or third, I’m just trying to win the contest. I just got to worry about what I want to do. I can’t stop the way Shaun or Bucky or anyone is skating. All I can do is better myself to skate better at each event. If you start worrying about other people, it throws your focus off.”

Last year White won three of the four Dew Tour vert comps, missing out on the first event because of a twisted ankle. This season he’s podiumed twice, but still no win.

Shaun White - Skateboard Vert Finals - Pantech Open 2011

“Usually for me I need that motivation,” White said about his success last season. “I need something to kind of push me forward to do better. And I think sitting there not being able to compete was that thing. So I used the motivation from that to get better.”

White said winning the Cup this season would be unreal.

“Just coming off these pretty heavy snowboard seasons, they take their toll on me,” White said. “It’s a whole different set of tricks and style of competing. So when I show up here it’s extremely refreshing, but it’s still frustrating. I got to relearn old tricks, I got to make up new tricks. I got to put it all together and hope to win. But the goal obviously is taking the whole Cup.”

To see who will take the Cup, check out Skate Vert finals are from 1:30-3 p.m. Sunday, October 16 on the ramp above the pool at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino or live on NBC Sports.

<![CDATA[Steven McCann Gunning for First BMX Vert Dew Cup]]> http://allisports.com/dew-tour/news/steven-mccann-gunning-for-first-dew-cup For the first time in the seven-year-history of the Dew Tour, the BMX vert Dew Cup is hanging precariously within the grasps of both Jamie Bestwick and Steven McCann.

]]>

For the first time in the seven-year-history of the Dew Tour, the BMX vert Dew Cup is hanging precariously within the grasps of both Jamie Bestwick and Steven McCann.

With a win at the last event in Salt Lake City, McCann closed the gap on Bestwick’s overall season lead. Going into Vegas, McCann is a mere 14 points behind Bestwick, and if either guy wins at the Dew Tour Championships, he’ll take home the Dew Cup.

Steve McCann - Winning the BMX Vert Finals In SLC

If McCann lays out a run like last he did last month in Salt Lake to take the Toyota Challenge win, he may put an end to a Dew Tour legacy. Bestwick is the one and only Dew Cup champion in BMX vert, and as much as he’d like to get his hands on a seventh Cup, McCann is gunning for his first.

Just beating Bestwick, 40, in the contest was a major accomplishment for the 28-year-old Australian, and it took a run with a triple tailwhip into a flair and a no-handed 900 to unseat him.

Jamie Bestwick - BMX Vert Finals - SLC

“There’s only a couple guys that have ever stood on the top step of the podium with Jamie in the mix, and I’m on that short list now,” McCann said.

No one has ever beat Bestwick in the race for the Dew Cup, but this could be the year that changes.

“It’s really close and going into Vegas all I can hope for is a great run and just see where I end up,” McCann said. “What I’m more pumped about is I told my dad if I win in Salt Lake City he has to come to Vegas. So I’ll be seeing you there, dad!”

Steve McCann - BMX Vert Finals - SLC

McCann has been called the triple threat of the Dew Tour in past seasons when he competed in all three bmx disciplines – park, dirt and vert. But this season he decided to focus his efforts on vert, and it’s paying off in a big way. Now it all comes down to the finals in Vegas on Sunday, Oct. 16 to see if McCann can make BMX history.
