Moto-X 338

In the summer of 1972, the first motocross race was held in Southwick, Massachusetts (which borders Connecticut). The collaboration of the local police and American Legionaries at the event raised $3,000 for the Jimmy Fund, supporting the fight against cancer in children and adults at Boston's Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

The following year, in July of 1973, the first Moto-X 338 race was held at American Legion Post 338. The New England Sports Committee (NESC) followed with scheduled events during the summer and fall of that year. With those races, an American motocross legend was born.

The Moto-X 338 track is the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship's perennial sand track, notoriously rough and physically exhausting, and has been since the first Southwick National event was held in 1976. That event was won by Dutch sand specialist and Honda factory rider Pierre Karsmakers.

Over the years, the Southwick track has become a favorite of some of American motocross racing’s toughest competitors. Bob “Hurricane” Hannah, Jeff Stanton, and Ricky Carmichael all counted the Moto-X 338 among their favorite tracks, with Stanton winning here four times in a row between 1989 and 1992, and Carmichael winning an astonishing nine consecutive races beginning in 1999.

Southwick is also known for the local heroes it produces, New England has always been a vibrant motocross community. Doug Henry and John Dowd were both fixtures on the Moto-X 338 podium throughout their storied careers, and the never-surrender Jo Jo Keller remains one of the sport’s mythical heroes.

Track promoters Diane-Peebles Pittello and Dante Molta have been involved since the beginning of Moto-X 338. In the early seventies, Pittello began attending races with friends and gained a passion for the sport, just as the first Moto-X 338 track was designed and raced upon. Diane was not heavily that involved at first, but by the late seventies she was working at the track with registration and scoring, among other things.

Diane soon took on a leadership role and, in 1989, along with Dante and five other partners, officially formed Moto-X 338. From that point, things really started to rock, as the team added a greater variety of racing, including ATVs and jeeps. Today, Diane and Dante are the sole owners of Moto-X 338.
