After the Southwick sand received quite a bit of rain over the night, practice was set to get underway at Moto-X 338.
250 Class
In the 250 class, it was Eli Tomac who came out to the early lead in both sessions, but his best time came from the second session when he set a blistering 1:58.914. Justin Barcia's second session brought the second-fastest time with a 2:00.681. Blake Baggett was third-fastest with a 2:00.77. The KTM duo of Marvin Musquin and Ken Roczen rounded out the top five. The rookie Zach Bell qualified ninth in his rookie debut.
450 class
Unlike the 250 class, the fastest time came from the first session, with Broc Tickle getting out to a early start and setting a 1:57.325, besting second-place Ryan Dungey's 1:57.637. Tyla Rattray, Tommy Hahn and hometown ripper Robert Marshall rounded out the top five. Mike Alessi qualified sixth overall, and Davi Millsaps, making his return to the series, landed in seventh. Local hero John Dowd qualified 36th.
