Santo Andre, Brazils Sandro Dias is truly on top of the world. After winning X Games 12 in Los Angeles only two weeks ago, Dias did the impossible in Portland by winning the Vans® Invitational Skate Vert Finals to claim his first-ever Dew Tour win. But his victory was no easy feat. Going up against an impressive list of skaters all with insane tricks up their sleeves, Dias pulled out all the stops and kept his cool when most would have caved under the intense pressure boiling out of the Rose Garden.
The first runs of the Finals saw 2005 Dew Tour champ Bucky Lasek and Floridas Anthony Furlong dominating the competition with flawless runs including Caballarials, tons of varial flips and Laseks patented backside ollie to tailslide over the channel. Montreals Max Dufour also had a solid run the first time around with tricks like kickflip indys to fakie and lofty ollies to fakie over the channel, and snow/skate jedi Shaun White slid into third with his usual smooth flow and a score of 81.75 despite a bail.
Australias Tas Pappas continued the madness and took things up a notch by landing the only 720 of the event, and Ventura, Californias Rob Lorifice stoked the crowd by busting sick FS and BS rodeo 540s that looked like he was snowboarding instead of skating. With all of the hot skating going on, however, one of the only disappointments was Bob Burnquist who was definitely having trouble landing his flip tricks and was noticeably out of rhythm.
Forget about the first runs though; once the second runs began, it was all about Sandro Dias. Sticking unreal one-footed 540 nosegrabs, the super-difficult gnar-jar and steezy madonnas to tail, Dias explosive second run score of 90.75 propelled into the lead and made him totally untouchable. And although Jean Postec was the only one who came close the second time around with a score of 85.25, everyone clearly knew that Sandro had it in the bag following his run, including Louisville and Denver champs Burnquist and White.
Its funny, there is a sticker on Sandros board that reads aqui vive um skateboarder, which roughly translates into lives now to skate. And judging by his performances in X Games and now Dew Tour, it now all makes sense; Dias skates in the moment at all times and always knows what is needed to absolutely destroy the competition.
Killer job Sandro!
