The title Bad Ideas couldn’t be more dead-on, as the video features riders triumphing over some of the most awkward and dangerous set-ups you’ve ever seen. One look at the bridge, rooftop, kink or gap they’re about to handle has you muttering bad idea. Riders jib over chain linked fences, straight into a deathtrap of crooked tree branches and stumps: ducking one branch to ride and bounce off another. Urban Riding takes precedence in this video, with much play given to long and steep handrails, icy wall rides, bridge overpasses—in once instance, riders even jib on the frame of a snow-covered house. The filmmakers seem to acknowledge their stylistic debt to another sport with the credits caption, “special thanks to skateboarding for being cooler than snowboarding”. Even with intermittent scenes shot in the backcountry—it’s obvious the riders hucking themselves off cliffs, kickers, and through mouth-watering pillow fields are park-trained riders. It's a perfect blend of new style and old school riding. The video is arguably the best video from News Room Cinemas, creators of the popular shred flicks Pumped to Be Stoked (2006) and last year’s Turnin’ and Burnin’.
The video was shot primarily in Colorado with a chunk of scenes in Minnesota (Rail-Mecca, as there isn't a decent mountain to ride for a thousand miles) and clearly demonstrates the amount of time spent “getting the shot” as the video is longer than usual, giving every rider about a five-minute (and well deserved) part. The video features many up-and-coming rippers, with the exception of long time pro, Chad Otterstrom. Featured riders include Madison Ellsworth, Chad Otterstrom, James Frederick, Wyatt Glynn, Ethan Deiss, Erich Dummer, Jake Olson-Elm, John Hodge, Pat Lynch, John Pape, Ricky Tucker, Austin Young, Pat Campanaro, and Austin Julik-Hiene.
The filmmaker summed up the overall attitude of this crew, "In a flooded video market, filled with HD cameras, budgets in the millions and corporate sponsors, we are the people who still run with scissors, charm cobras, wear black socks with brown shoes, live off the dollar menu, get twisted, piss into the wind, wear jean short shorts, smash pumpkins, and still keep it real. Good people, great locations, fun times and Bad Ideas".
