Well, it's finally here: the Gatorade Free Flow Tour Finals are about to get started in Salt Lake City. The courses are going up, the PlayStations are ready in the athlete lounge, just waiting to get played, and slabs of Gatorade await the arrival of the 78 ams who will be competing this weekend.
So, first off, a little re-cap as to how we got here: over the past 4 months, Gatorade Free Flow Tour has crossed the country, stopping at 33 skateparks, to hold 53 Skate and BMX contests. It's been a summer that's seen some insane skating and riding going down. There was the early summer string of comps that say the likes of 14-year-olds Caedyn Curto and Chase Webb dominating the So Cal comps. There was Sammy Schoondewoerd going for broke and trying a 900 in the Encinitas Skate Vert comp. There was CJ Dixon winning in front of a huge crowd at the first-ever Gatorade Free Flow Tour at M.I.A. Skatepark in Miami. On the BMX side, the Tour got started off strong with the comp at Incline Club that saw Brandon Kitson take the win, but also had three other riders who would eventually earn trips to the Finals through other competitions or the video contest. Jonny Harnisch and Chad Kerley provided some great mid-summer highlights, before things wrapped up Matt Whyatt flip-whipping his way to a win in Greenville.
The winners all earned a free trip to Salt Lake City to compete for the overall title this weekend. Earning that title, though, is no easy feat: the ams will be walking into a full pro tour set up at the Toyota Challenge of the Dew Tour. That means screaming fans, huge ramps, challenging courses, and of course, some of the biggest names of their sports watching them throw down. Whoever comes out on top earns a ticket to Orlando and a spot in the pro Prelims down there, as well as a new Verizon phone, some sweet Ogio luggage, and of
course, a shiny Gatorade Free Flow Tour trophy.
Skate Vert will be the first Finals to go down, and the kids are just starting to arrive. We've got Dalton Dern, the Skate Park winner who slayed the course at the Mission Valley YMCA stop, and got a wildcard for holding down in Vert as well. We also have Sammy and Zane Timpson, who were featured in the Gatorade Free Flow Tour Skate series on Encinitas.
On Friday, everyone else comes into town. In addition to Webb, Curto, and Dixon, Skate Park has some other Gatorade Free Flow Tour veterans like Ryan Thompson, Alex Longcamp, and Jack Olson. There are also the newcomers though, like London Davis from the Gatorade Free Flow Tour Skate series on Warp Skatepark. On the BMX side, the Park comp will be going down on Saturday morning, with the Vert competition leading of Sunday's competitions.
