After competing in both Park and Dirt on the '05 and '06 Dew Tours, Steve McCann went all-in for 2007, signing up to ride Vert, as well. That's a lot of full-bore contest-level riding over the course of each stop, but McCann is managing quite well. At stop one in Baltimore, he finished 16th in Dirt, 10th in Park, and 4th in Vert, proving that he's got the all-around skills to hang in any event that involves a BMX bike. We caught up with him during a break in one of his practice sessions to find out how he's pulling it off.
Q: How do you manage your time on site to make sure you're prepped for each contest?
A: You know, it's all just bike riding. There may be a lot of practices and comps scheduled for the weekend, but they're fairly spread out. I think that any one of these guys, if they didn't ride every single practice for Park, or every single practice for Dirt, they could do all three events. I think we all ride enough to be able to do it. It's actually been a lot of fun for me; I don't think it's as big of a deal as people are making it out to be.
Q: You're not getting worn out?
A: Not really, but I have been limiting my practice time. It does hurt if I go down in one event and I'm sore the next day. Apart from that, it's been a lot of fun, and I look forward to being busy every day, rather than just sitting around waiting for something to happen.
Q: Is there any one event you really want to do well in?
A: I've always felt as though Park is my strong point, but apparently it's not this year (laughs). Vert seems to be my strong point now, which is weird to say. I ride a lot of Vert at home with Jamie [Bestwick] at the moment, and I'm really looking forward to seeing what I can do with it. I've been putting a lot of effort into learning some new stuff.
Q: Is any one aspect more fun for you than the others?
A: I actually hate the fact that people categorize riders, like he's a Dirt rider, he's a Vert rider, he's a Park rider It's all bike riding, even if you're just riding down the street and jumping the gutters on the sidewalk. Who cares what discipline you're riding or how you're riding it, or if you're wearing a full-face helmet on Dirt or whatever. It's just riding, and I love it. I'm going to keep doing it and just enjoy riding every discipline and aspect of BMX. Except for flatland, because that's hard. I respect every one of those guys.
Q: What did you ride when you first started out?
A: I actually started BMX racing. I did that for a long time, then got into dirt jumping, then I started riding concrete bowls. I've always said that whatever keeps you interested is what you should move into. Never let someone call you a Park rider or a Dirt rider or whatever; just enjoy everything when you're on your bike.
Q: What do you think the future holds for your riding?
A: I really want to start concentrating more on Vert. I had planned on not entering Vert until next year, but Jamie convinced me that I had to ride Vert at the first stop. I decided that if I made Finals in Baltimore I'd ride Vert for the rest of the year. Here I am riding the second stop, and I've made finals again, so I'm pumped. I had considered pulling out of Dirt soon, but now that I've done it, I think I'll just continue to ride all three and just have fun with it.
Q: Do you have any specific goals for the Dew Tour this year?
A: I want to stay healthy and make it through the year. I'm glad to be healthy after last year, when I was out for a few events. I feel like I'm riding back to my full potential, so I'd like to just continue that for the rest of the year.
