The year Shaun White minted Gold in the Winter Olympics, he did something even more incredible - he won everything else.
Whites winter streak in the 20052006 season included all five Grand Prix Olympic Qualifier events, the X Games in Aspen, the Honda Session at Vail, the Flying Tomato Olympics in Turin, Italy, and finally the US Open. Snowboarder Keir Dillon is on record this month in Future Snowboarding Magazine recalling, The rest of us would pretty much go into each contest knowing we were competing for second.
The worlds top pro vert skaters on the AST Dew Tour are starting to understand the sentiment.
White is hugely competitive, thrives under pressure, and loves to keep a good thing going. So far this year hes won every major Vert skateboarding contest hes entered in North America, including big wins on the first three stops of the Dew Tour and at X Games 13. Heading into Salt Lake City for the Toyota Challenge, White has a perfect score of 300 in the overall standings in the race for the Dew Cup. Hes well on his way to putting another perfect season on his resume.
Veteran pros Bob Burnquist, Bucky Lasek, Andy Macdonald, Pierre-Luc Gagnon are keeping the pressure on, with a new generation Alex Perelson, Mathias Ringstrom, and Rob Lorifice close behind, but even the pros are starting to say it. White may very well be unstoppable, and hes forcing everybody to step up their own riding to meet the occasion.
Over in the Skate Park, Ryan Sheckler's reign of ruling it is almost as complete. He won the first two Dew Tour stops and was making it known that he was after all five before his friend and rival Greg Lutzka found a way to shut him down last month in Portland at the Vans Invitational.
With 218 points to Shecklers 275, Lutzka is now in position to threaten him for the Dew Cup overall standings. Sheckler won the big prize in both 2005 and 2006, and is a huge favorite for the three-peat, but Lutzkas been calmly and quietly collecting points wins in Salt Lake City or at the PlayStation Pro in Orlando could put him on top. Theres also no doubt that Carlos de Andrade, Rodolfo Ramos and Jereme Rogers promise to keep things interesting.
Everyone out there is just killing it, says Lutzka. Its just a matter of whos on and whos off on a given day. Any of the skaters out there could take a win. But what matters more is that when you put everybody together and we start challenging each other, the result is that youre seeing some of the best skateboarding ever.
Words that the Dew Tour skaters are sure to live by in Salt Lake City.
