Heres a simple fact: There is nobody on the AST Dew Tour skating as fast or going as big as
Shaun White
. Hes not the only guy throwing big spins like the 720 or impressive technical flip trick combos in his runs, but when hes doing them twice as high as anybody else, his presence is undeniable. Even old stand-bys like the McTwist seem brand new when White is soaring them and completely inverting ¬ eight to ten feet above the lip.
Under the World Cup Skateboarding format used on this years Dew Tour, each skater gets three runs to put something together. When skaters fall before their 45 seconds are up, they tend to scratch and hope for a better run in the later rounds. In tonights contest, with wind coming off of Lake Eerie and lots of falls, that meant a lot of the action got pushed all the way to the third round. Bob Burnquist
, Andy Macdonald, and Mathias Ringstrom held the top spots after Run 1; Bucky Lasek
, Burnquist, and Rune Glifberg ruled after Run 2. Shaun Whites big speed and big air are also his biggest liabilities: falls in his first two runs left everybody else room to maneuver.
Burnquists second run featuring a frontside 540 rodeo, a backside 540, and a huge frontside cab to lien grab held strong for a podium finish at 3rd place with 87.00 points.
Lasek the two-time Dew Tour champ and winner of yesterdays Prelims event put together a run with a frontside rodeo 540 and a heelflip frontside gay twist, good enough for 2nd place with 89.00 points.
You can never count Shaun White out, though; he is best under pressure. The last skater to take the ramp, White stomped his run with a huge 720, a fully-inverted McTwist and the Crumble, a frontside rodeo 540 with a body varial thrown in for good measure. White is now two for two on 2007 tour, and tonights win at the Right Guard Open brings his points total in the quest for the Dew Cup to 200. Burnquist now trails in 2nd place in the overall standings with 138 points, and Lasek clocks in at third with 130.
Just so you dont get sick of hearing those same three names over and over, here are a few others worth mentioning:
Rune Glifberg finished 4th in tonights Finals. Hes been winning World Cup Skateboarding competitions all over the globe this year and was skating in top form tonight. He may very well get his day in one of the next Dew Tour events. Andy Macdonald
continues to be a threat at age 33; he landed three back-to-back 540 variations in his run tonight for 5th place. Mathias Ringstrom is skating better than ever, putting cab heelflips and frontside stalefish gay twists into his runs for 6th place. And while none of them made the Finals here in Cleveland, we probably havent seen the last of Sandro Dias, Jean Postec, or Alex Perelson either, each are capable of pulling out Dew Tour wins.
