As far as skateboarding goes, the 2006 Dew Tour season could not have unfolded any better - unreal tricks and creativity, cutthroat competition, and enough high-energy moments to hold over even the most hardcore skate fans until next season. In case you are one of the few that hasnt followed the excitement over the past five months, here is a recap of what weve witnessed in the park and on the vert ramp at the hottest action sports series of the year.
The first stop of the tour, Louisvilles Panasonic Open, saw Brazils Bob Burnquist and SoCal slayer Ryan Sheckler cause jaws to drop and heads to turn with technical tricks and sick lines that made everyone take notice. Taking first in Vert and Park, the two seemed to be totally unstoppable and had their A-games on for sure. Traveling to the Mile High City in July for the Right Guard Open, the tables turned with Shaun White killing the Vert Finals and Boston street wizard Jereme Rogers destroying Park to walk away with their first wins of the 2006 season.
If there is one thing you can expect in skateboarding, its that you never know whatll happen, and that was exactly the case for Portlands Vans® Invitational in August. Fresh off the heels of his X Games Vert win only two weeks earlier, high-flyer Sandro Dias stole the show with tricks like the gnar-jar and walked away with his first-ever Dew Tour Vert win, and Ryan Sheckler skated hard to steal the first place spot back from Rogers in Skate Park.
Heading to the beautiful northern California hills of San Jose for Septembers Toyota Challenge, the cards finally fell in Bucky Lasek's favor as he walked away with his first win of the season in Vert after flawless runs, and Ryan Sheckler blew minds by walking away with his third win of the season in Park. And finally in Orlando, Lasek and Sheckler sealed the deal for the Dew Cup for the second straight year in Vert and Park, while Jereme Rogers walked away with his second win of the season to take the skate spotlight.
If there are any lessons that can be learned from the 2006 Dew Action Sports Tour skate season, its that its not over until the very end. Skateboarding always has its ups-and-downs, but you cannot write anyone off until the final kickflip is landed, the last boardslide is slid, and the final McTwist is stuck. Thanks go out to all of the athletes and fans for pushing the envelope of skateboarding competitions, and well catch you next May to see it all go down again. Until then, skate hard, keep your style clean and most importantly, stay stoked!
