Tabron Tops BMX Vert

The Right Guard Open's final event pitted the best BMX Vert riders against each other for a crack at the $15,000 grand prize and the coveted 100 points that go with it. The contest brought out a few surprises, tightening up the race for the Dew Cup.

The biggest surprise came from Francisco "Coco" Zurita. He spent a minute psyching himself up for his run before dropping in for a few airs on the 15-foot section and uncorking a triple tailwhip. It was perfect, the first one ever landed in Vert competition. He got hugs and high-fives from the other riders and went down in the history books in the process.

Jamie Bestwick had a great first run going before sliding out on a flair whip, which is the exact same thing that happened to Chad Kagy in his first run. Not a huge deal for those guys, as they've battled back for spectacular second runs before. In his second attempt, Kagy dropped a superman seatgrab barspin, a scissor-kick superman seatgrab, multiple flairs, and pulled the flair whip just before crashing a barspin flair. Things didn't go as well for Bestwick, though. He did a killer whip to x-up on the extension but missed his pump on the next wall and had to pop out on the deck, losing a few precious seconds. He dropped back in and hit big turndown and no-handed flairs, but was held to a very unusual 7th place.

Jay Eggleston blasted the highest, scariest 540s of the night, and Kevin Robinson laid out multiple flair and 540 variations. Steven McCann took his first podium spot in only his second Dew Tour Vert contest, finishing 2nd with no-handed flairs and 540s, turndown flairs, and double tailwhips. Finishing on top was Simon Tabron, who dropped a perfect no-handed to barspin 540. It was Simon's second Dew Tour win.

The Vert Final in Cleveland proved that anything can happen. Everybody's riding at a high level, so it's tough to predict exactly what the Vert riders will bring to the table next month in Portland.
