Talking Winter with Hannah Teter

Hannah Teter in action

How stoked are pro snowboarders for the first Winter Dew Tour? We caught up with pro snowboarder and Olympic Gold Medalist Hannah Teter at the Wendy’s Invitational in Portland – where she was catching some Dew Tour action - to find out.

Allisports.com: Now that you’ve had a chance to check out some of the skate and BMX events on the summer Dew Tour, what are you looking forward to this winter?

Hannah Teter: It’s so exciting. I love the whole format and vibe of the Dew Tour. Everything is geared toward progression, and to see how technical and advanced everything is getting in skateboarding makes me stoked for what it could do for snowboarding. I’ll be on home turf when the Winter Dew Tour is in Vermont, and I live in Tahoe now so it’s like double home-style.

Do you have any personal goals for the Winter Dew Tour?

Teter: Oh, yeah. I’m on a mission. I donate all my contest winnings to charity now, so I’m going in hard this season, trying to raise money for a big water project in Kenya and for Children International, so I want to win every single event, Halfpipe and Slopestyle, win all the money, and dedicate it all to the charities I’m working with. I’ve got a lot of work to do. How’s that?

How did a pro snowboarder get involved in a water project in Kenya?

Teter: After the Olympics I just felt really inspired to do something big on an international level, and after a little bit of research we found out how easily we could make a really big impact, helping out an entire town in Kenya. So I started a maple syrup company, called it Hannah’s Gold, and partnered with World Vision to help come in big in this town, Kirindon, Kenya. We’re going down there in October, and I’m stoked.

I made the decision to donate all of my contest winnings to charity, and I’ve been snowboarding even harder ever since because of it. We’re gonna have a big charity pancake party in Vermont when the Winter Dew Tour comes to Mount Snow in January.

Do you have a sense of how other snowboarders are feeling about the new Winter Dew Tour?

Teter: Everyone’s stoked. It’s the biggest prize purse for a circuit tour and it’s Halfpipe and Slopestyle, everyone’s happy with the format, everybody’s seen the kind of exposure it’s given to skateboarding, BMX, and FMX, and everybody’s stoked on anything that’s about progression, pushing snowboarding forward.

The rate of progression in women’s snowboarding has been especially staggering.

Teter: Right? It’s crazy. The girls just keep going and going. I’ll see somebody throw out something new every time we go out to ride, and the bar gets raised at every contest. This winter’s going to be crazy. I think the Winter Dew Tour’s gonna be sweet!

What else are you looking forward to this season?

Teter: I’m going to be busy. I’ve been filming with Burton at Mt. Hood over the summer, I’ve got a bunch of charity projects I’m working on, and I’m going to be traveling all over the place snowboarding my heart out. There are the World Cups, the Winter Dew Tour, X Games… I just have a bunch of contests lined up, probably the most I’ve ever done in a winter, so I’m just getting my game face on and really just feeling the good vibes, traveling, hitting the scene.

How do you keep your focus with so much going on?

Teter: I just feel so blessed, you know? To have a passion for a sport that I completely love to do and have it be not only my job but also a way for me to help all these other people. I couldn’t be happier. I feel so hooked up, like the universe decided, “She’s going to be one of the lucky ones.” I’m super stoked and I just try to shine that through whenever I’m riding: I’m super grateful for it. Thank you, universe!
