"They're rockstars in Orlando."
That quote came from Bill McCaffray of Alliance Wake, when we were interviewing him for the Alli Show. He was talking about the stars of Wakeboarding and Wakeskating, who as he says, pretty much own Orlando.
Orlando is the center of Wake, so it's not too often you see someone from the sport, who lived and grew up in the area, make a move across the country. But that's exactly what the star of the Alli Show: Wake, Nick Taylor, did earlier this year. Nick is all about bettering wakeskate - both personally, and the sport as a whole. So, he moved to Carlsbad, California with both things in mind. He could skate and
surf whenever he wanted, two sports he says have a major influence on his wakeskating. But, he could also be closer to the companies and people from other action sports, and help to get the word out about
wakeskating.
They were pretty big plans for a young guy moving out of his house for the first time. And that's exactly what we wanted to follow for the Alli Show. When we joined up with Nick, he was a few months in to his California life, and ready to show us what that world was all about. Two of his Nike 6.0 teammates, wakeboarders Adam Errington and Eddie Valdez, came down for a couple days, and Nick clued everyone into what he's been doing, which was a lot of surfing, skating, and good beach times with California girls. We got to see how these influences informhis wakeskating, while also diving into the relationship of wakeboarding to wakeskating with Adam and Eddie.
If there's one thing that brings them all together, though, it was a desire to keep pushing their sports to new places. That came up time and time again, so we finally wanted to see what they were talking about. Enter Josh Sleigh, winch pioneer, and a trip to the waves. Josh took us to the ocean, where Nick and Eddie sessioned the waves behind his winch. It was a classic example of combining different influences, and a great view to what a winch can provide.
For the rest of the shoot, we got to see even more of what winching's all about, as we followed Nick to meet up with his Nike 6.0 wakeskate teammates, to finish filming the Nike movie Aquafrolics in Texas. Watching those guys work for hours to land seemingly impossible tricks in rivers and areas filled with Texans out to have a good time, was a great glimpse into what this sport is all about.
Nick Taylor may be funny and like to joke around with his friends, but he is also a very serious and determined person. And that side came out the second it was time for an interview or when we hit the water. Nick would go from antics to getting through exactly what needed to be done.
