Whats Up Chuck?

Whats Up Chuck?

Chuck Carothers, man of many wonders, sets foot on the FMX course in Denver hoping to qualify and make the rest of the Dew Tour. Carothers, a freestyle motocross rider and inventor of the only body varial in FMX (called the Carolla), gives the Dew Tour a second shot after pulling out of the Louisville contest. The Dew Tour was able to catch him during practice to see what he’s been up to in the meantime.

Q: You were in Louisville, but didn’t end up riding in the open qualifier; what happened?
A: I wasn’t prepared; I rode too relaxed and was not mentally prepared. I didn’t attack practice like I should have, and then practices got cut shorter and I hadn’t really done any of my tricks. I m pretty good at going out and doing things when I know I’m not prepared, and then Ill do them anyway and then get hurt. For me its all mental and I wasn’t mentally prepared to be in Louisville. My first practice here today and I feel way better than in Louisville.

Q: What have you been up to in between now and then?
A: I’ve ridden three times (laughter). Unfortunately the weather in Houston has been pretty bad. I did a show in Missouri, rode at home one day before the rain, and once in Oklahoma right before coming here. The rain has been following me everywhere I go.

Q: What is the scene like over at your compound, Camp Chuck?
A: Camp Chuck is going good. The foam pit is great. I never ended up getting a resi, but the pit is running good. I have a harness in my garage that hangs from the rafters where you can work on body varials and I have a really good course as well.

Q: I’m sure everyone has been asking, but what’s the deal with the Carolla?
A: I was hoping to do it here in Denver but I didn’t get a chance to pull it on dirt at my house because of the rain, which pretty much means that I wont get a spot in X Games; which is pretty crappy and you can let everyone know how I feel about that. I did it in 04, crashed it in the snow and then crashed at Summer X. I’m one for three and that’s not bad odds. They think someone’s going to do a new flip combo that’s going to be better than my Carolla. It bums me out. I’m going to do it to dirt at my house in the next week or so and just lay it all out there and let every one know about it.

Q: So are you going to focus more on the Dew Tour?
A: I still have to qualify. I feel good today and hopefully Ill do good in this qualifier and get into the rest of the show. If I ride the way I know I can, Ill get in.
