By the time the skiers took to the pipe at Snowbasin, the snow was starting to really come down in Ogden. The powder just kept coming harder and harder as the contest progressed, adding another element to the challenge of conquering the 615-foot superpipe.

Putting together a run that started off with a 900 into an alley-oop 900, a left 720 tailgrab, switch alley-oop right 720, 540, and right 540, Broby Leeds capped it off with a big 1080, taking the lead away from Hunter Visser with just one rider left in the contest. Leeds, making his first appearance in superpipe finals since 2010, held on to take the win and claim the championship and the spot in next year's Winter Dew Tour.

Broby Leeds

The 17-year-old Leeds had been going for a similar run on his first drop-in, but washed out on the second of his back-to-back 540's. "I added a couple hits," Leeds said of adapting his run to the contest. "I didn’t have to add in anything new, but worked on performing them better."

At Leeds' first superpipe final in 2010, the contest was won by a young kid named Torin Yater-Wallace. Just two years later, Torin has become one of the biggest names in the sport. Leeds will now have a chance to take advantage of a similar opportunity, as his pre-qualified spot in next season's Winter Dew Tour is secure. "I’m very excited!" he said. "I have a lot to learn I think, but it should be lots of fun."

Hunter Visser's 2nd-place run was pretty stellar in its own right. The Canadian skier dropped in and executed a 900, right 540, another 900, back-to-back 720's and an alley-oop flatspin 540 to top it off. Visser held the lead for a good portion of the contest before giving way to Leeds. While he didn't top the podium, Visser established himself as the most consistent rider of the contest, posting 2 of the 3 highest single-run scores of the contest with an 85.75 and an 85.25.

Hudson Knoll rounded out the podium in 3rd, landing an alley-oop flatspin 540, back-to-back 540s, and a flair in his run. You also gotta give it up for Conor Garrecht-Connelly, who competed with a broken right thumb that forced him to ski with one pole. CGC put down a solid 2nd run, throwing a combination of 900's, alley-oop flatspin 540's and flairs to finish one spot outside the podium.

<![CDATA[Kent Callister Completes the Sweep, Wins Snowboard Pipe Title Along With Kelly Berger]]> http://allisports.com/winter-gatorade-free-flow-tour/news/kent-callister-and-kelly-berger-win-snowboard-pipe-finals The snowboard world is now officially on notice. The snowboard world is now officially on notice. The name Kent Callister is one that will come to be known more and more over the next few seasons. The 16-year-old scored his second win in a 24 hour span, pairing Saturday's slopestyle win with a superpipe championship on Sunday, in the process becoming the first competitor to ever win 2 championships in a single Gatorade Free Flow Tour season.

Dropping in for his first run, Callister immediately caught the attention of the fans and judges with a monster backside air on his first hit. From there, he threw down the gauntlet, landing a frontside 1080 on his 2nd wall. The rest of his run was stellar as well, executing a Haakon flip, frontside 720, frontside 900, into a backside 900, then wrapping it up with a crippler.

Kent Callister makes it 2-for-2

Callister was one of three riders to successfully land a 1080 in the contest. Chase Josey landed a frontside 10 a little deep on his first run, leading him to wash out on a front 9 on his next hit. Showing lots of promise despite the first run troubles, Josey bounced back on his 2nd try, throwing back-to-back 900's before going into the frontside 10. Wrapping his run up with a cab 720, frontside 720, and an inverted backside 900, the 16-year-old from Idaho posted a great score that put him into 2nd.

Brandon Davis, the only rider in the contest aside from Callister pulling double duty this week, also landed the 1080, doing it cab on his first run. The trick was preceded by a Haakon flip, back-to-back 540's and a frontside 720. The run landed him on the podium on 3rd, a modest improvement from last year's 4th-place showing.

Callister's 2nd run brought about one of the day's biggest "did that really just happen?!" moments. Needing something major to step up his already-impressive score, he attempted a double mctwist in the middle of his run. An amateur rider even thinking of throwing a trick like that just seems to defy plausibility. Even though the trick wasn't landed, the fact that he even went for it gave everyone in attendance a glimpse of what the future might hold. Adding a double mctwist to the first run Callister had is the kind of thing that gets you into a Winter Dew Tour final.

Another notable contestant was Max Jenson, the youngest competitor in any contest this weekend. If that name sounds familiar to any of our season-long fans, it could be because he competed in skateboard vert finals at the Gatorade Free Flow Tour this past summer. Safe to say the kid's a legitimate two-sport athlete at just 13 years of age. He launched huge backside airs in the pipe and demonstrated execution of the frontside 900 and Haakon flip.

The men's contest was preceded by the ladies. Kirby Kelly, the only girl to make superpipe finals in all 3 years of the Gatorade Free Flow Tour, held the lead entering the 2nd set of runs. But before the order could circle back around to Kirby for a victory lap, 16-year-old Kelly Berger stated her case for the title.

Kelly Berger

Berger's run started off with a frontside 540, backside 540 and back-to-back-airs, all setting up a big-time frontside 720. The run wrapped up with a cab 360 and a frontside air tailgrab. The 720 really helped set the Mammoth Lakes native apart form the rest of the contenders, giving her the lead with just one rider to go.

Coming back around to Kirby Kelly, the challenge had been issued. She'd need to find a way to top what the judges had just witnessed. Kirby landed a mctwist on her first hit, going into back-to-back 540's and 3 setup airs before attempting a backside 900, washing out in the process. The 2nd place finish matched her previous best result at the Gatorade Free Flow Tour Finals, when she finished as the runner up in 2010.

Noelle Edwards rounded out the podium for the women, with Shannon Branthoover taking 4th a day after competing in slopestyle.

With the wins, Kent Callister and Kelly Berger earn pre-qualified spots into next season's Winter Dew Tour.

<![CDATA[Dual-Threat Kent Callister and Brooke Voigt Crowned Snowboard Slopestyle Champions]]> http://allisports.com/winter-gatorade-free-flow-tour/news/kent-callister-and-brooke-voigt-crowned-snowboard-slopestyle-champions The second day of the Gatorade Free Flow Tour Finals brought with it snowboard slopestyle finals for the men and women, with Kent Callister and Brooke Voigt topping the podiums.

]]>

The second day of the Gatorade Free Flow Tour Finals brought with it snowboard slopestyle finals for the men and women. Considering the prize at-hand for the winners - a spot in next year's Winter Dew Tour - It's only fitting that the finalists were tasked with mastering a course designed for pro riders. While the course did present itself as a challenge for many riders, they still rose to the occasion in impressive fashion.

In the men's contest, 16-year-old Kent Callister was the last rider scheduled to drop in for his run, allowing him time to take stock of the contest. "It's a little bit [of an advantage] just to see if anyone was landing their run or not," Callister said.

Kent Callister

Among the riders Callister got to watch was 21-year-old Mark Reininga, a past finalist in the Gatorade Free Flow Tour. In his run, Reininga landed a 50-50 to frontside 360 out up top and a backside 900 on the first jump, putting him in the lead.

A few minutes later, Callister dropped into the course and layed down a sick run, exhibiting control on the top rails and landing some big spins on the jumps at the bottom. Most importantly for the Bend, Oregon native, he executed all the tricks he wanted to get into his run, leaving nothing on the table. Callister's run started off with a frontside lipslide on the first rail, into a boardslide to fakie on the 2nd rail. After a cab boardslide 270 out off the cannonbox, Callister then reached the jumps section, lofting a cab 900, and then adding a frontside 1080 as the exclamation point to his run.

Becoming the first rider top crack into the 80's with his score, Callister grabbed the top spot, outscoring Reininga by just a single point.

The 2nd set of runs was a wait and see game for Callister, but even with everyone going all out, no one was able to top his score.

By the time the contest circled back around to him, the contest was locked up, and he just took a mellow victory lap through the course. "The course was super fun," an excited Callister said after the contest. "I really liked it."

With the win, Callister earns a pre-qualified spot in next year's Winter Dew Tour. "That'll be pretty sweet," he said, looking ahead to next year. "I'm stoked to do that."

One of two riders competing in both disciplines this weekend, Callister will now look to carry over his success to Sunday's superpipe finals.

Mark Reininga held on for 2nd place, while fellow video contest winner Wylie Adams took home 3rd.

In the women's division, 18-year-old Brooke Voigt claimed the top spot. Making the trip with her boyfriend Tyler Macrae, who competed in the men's contest, the Canadian went 50-50 on the first rail, into a 50-50 frontside boardslide, then a tailgrab off the cannon rail. She then landed a smooth frontside 360 on the first jump, earning points from the judges for her execution.

Voigt was challenged by Nirvana Ortanez and Jessika Jenson, both of whom landed back-to-back 360s, but ultimately had to settle for 2nd and 3rd, respectively. We also saw some solid riding from Kirra Kotsenburg, younger sister of Sage, who challenged the podium, but finished just outside in 4th.

All in all, it was a solid day of riding from this group of ams, and it all leads into what should be another exciting final on Sunday for snowboard superpose.

<![CDATA[15-Year-Old Andy Partridge Wins Freeski Slopestyle Championship]]> http://allisports.com/winter-gatorade-free-flow-tour/news/15-year-old-andy-partridge-wins-freeski-slopestyle-championship Taking to the same slopestyle course that the Winter Dew Tour riders have been riding on this week, the 9 qualified riders came out charging, looking to put it all in the line so that they could call themselves champions and win that spot in the Winter Dew Tour next year.

]]>

The Gatorade Free Flow Tour Finals kicked off Friday afternoon in Snowbasin, culminating a season of hard work and anticipation for a select group of amateur skiers. Taking to the same slopestyle course that the Winter Dew Tour riders have been riding on this week, the 9 qualified riders came out charging, looking to put it all in the line so that they could call themselves champions and win that spot in the Winter Dew Tour next year.

Park City’s Andy Partridge ended up stealing the show on this day. Finding himself in 3rd behind Sam Viseur and Max Szekely after the first set of runs, the 15-year-old skier showed veteran-like poise. Partridge, the youngest competitor in the field, dialed things up a notch for his 2nd run, throwing a run worthy of a big score.

First taking to the rail section of the slopestyle course, Partridge went 270 onto the down-rail, followed by a frontside switch-up to backside 270 on the up-down rail. He capped off the upper section by spinning a 270 off the cannon rail. Moving on the jumps section, Partridge excelled there, landing a right 900 and then finishing off with a big switch 1080. As soon as the switch 10 on the last hit was stomped, everyone knew that the lead would be changing hands.

“The course was really good,” an excited Partridge said after the contest. “I’m stoked it was on the Dew Tour course. It was a lot of fun.”

Partridge would hold on for the remainder of the competition, as his 87.25 score was never truly challenged. Despite falls on their 2nd runs, Viseur and Szekely would hold on to the 2nd and 3rd spots respectively, putting them both on the podium.

Perhaps providing a bit of an edge, Partridge didn’t have to travel very far for this one. The Park City native competed locally at Brighton last weekend, earning his spot in Finals with a slopestyle win there. Just a few days later, he found himself making the drive to Snowbasin with his family in-tow. It was obvious that having his family in attendance made the win even more special for Partridge.

With this victory, Partridge has secured himself a spot in next year’s Winter Dew Tour. Looking ahead to the enormous opportunity awaiting him, Partridge said “It’s something I’ve been wanting to do for awhile, and I’m really stoked that I get to do it now.”

The wacky winter weather resulted in the Gatorade Free Flow Tour adding one more superpipe stop to the schedule. Snowbasin had just finished creating the world's largest pipe (615 feet!) in preparation for the Winter Dew Tour and stepped up to host the event.

The contest provided many hopeful amateurs with their final shot at qualifying into Finals, which will be hosted here at Snowbasin over the weekend. It also presented an opportunity for riders like Nik Baden and Broby Leeds, both already locked into finals, to get a jumpstart on practicing in the massive superpipe.

At the end of the day, 3 new finalists were added to their respective rosters: Chase Josey (men's snowboard), Kelly Berger (women's snowboard), and Hunter Visser (freeski.)

All three finals will take place on Sunday. Check back on gatoradefreeflowtour.com for a full recap afterwards.

<![CDATA[Gatorade Free Flow Tour Freeski Finals Preview]]> http://allisports.com/winter-gatorade-free-flow-tour/feature/gatorade-free-flow-tour-freeski-finals-preview After 4 weeks of competitions from coast-to-coast, a select group of amateur skiers have earned their spots in the Gatorade Free Flow Tour Finals, taking place this weekend at Snowbasin Resort in Utah. In both slopestyle and superpipe, talented riders will be vying for that top position with a spot in next year's Winter Dew Tour on the line.

After 4 weeks of competitions from coast-to-coast, a select group of amateur skiers have earned their spots in the Gatorade Free Flow Tour Finals, taking place this weekend at Snowbasin Resort in Utah. In both slopestyle and superpipe, talented riders will be vying for that top position with a spot in next year's Winter Dew Tour on the line. Past winners have included Torin Yater-Wallace, and you know these kids will be looking to follow in his footsteps.

Freeski Slopestyle

The slopestyle field this year will feature a few tour veterans, including four finalists (Duncan, Hibbs, Hamilton, Briggs) returning from last year. Included in that group is Vermont's Will Hibbs, who has now made finals in all 3 years of the Gatorade Free Flow Tour's history.

In total, 3 countries on 2 continents (USA, Canada, New Zealand) will be represented by the finalists, with ages ranging from 15 through 21 years old. Here's a look first at some of the returning finalists we could see make some noise.

Tyler Duncan
Age: 16
Past Finals appearances: 3rd (2011)

Tyler was in good company on the podium last year, as Robby Franco and young Wille Borm have spent this season competing against the pro talent on the Winter Dew Tour. The Maine native finds himself back at Snowbasin this year by virtue of his win at Okemo.

Will Hibbs
Age: 17
Past Finals appearances: 5th (2010), 5th (2011)

Hibbs has experience on his side, having placed in the top 5 at both of his previous appearances in finals. He's proved to be quite dedicated already, making an 11-hour drive from his home in Vermont down to Seven Springs to compete at the Gatorade Free Flow Tour this year.

Ian Hamilton
Age: 19
Past Finals appearances: 6th (2011)

Tricks like the switch 900 will make Ian a name to watch on Friday. After placing a respectable 6th in last year's appearance, he's earned a return trip after winning the slopestyle contest at Jackson Hole.

The rest of the field...

Taylor King, 16: the lone representative from outside North America, King hails from New Zealand
Noah Wallace, 20: came close to making finals lin 2011 after finishing 2nd at Vail
Max Heard, 19: the lone Canadian in the field finished on the podium at Jackson Hole before winning at Mount Bachelor a few weeks later
Max Szekely, 17: has the switch 900 among his arsenal of tricks
Andy Partridge, 15: ability to spin in opposite directions helps keep him on par with other riders
Matt Heffernan, 21: one of three Virtual Stop video contest winners, oldest rider in the field
Sam Viseur, 18: another wildcard from the video contest
Michael Briggs: 2011 finalist, earned his spot through the video contest

Freeski Superpipe

This year's superpipe field is a bit smaller due to the unseasonably warm temps this winter that hindered the production of pipes across the country this year. But that doesn't mean it's devoid of talent in any way.

Most of the riders in the field have the 900 in their bag of tricks, so it may come down to who has the variations or who's able to step it up a notch as these guys look to set themselves apart in the contest.

Ty Wellman
Age: 18
Past Finals appearances: 7th (2011)

Back-to-back 900's helped propel Wellman to the win at Vail this year. The Boyne City, Michigan resident will return to Snowbasin this year looking to improve on last year's 7th-place finish. In August 2010, he was invited to compete in the International Ski Federation Junior World Championships

Broby Leeds
Age: 18
Past Finals appearances: 7th (2010)

Although Broby missed Finals last year, he's been relatively consistent in competition over the last few years, racking up four top-six finishes at local qualifiers in 2010 and 2011. In December, the Vail native tried his hand at breaking into the pro ranks through the Winter Dew Tour’s qualifiers in Breckenridge, Colorado

. Broby was selected as a wildcard after submitting a stellar video part to the Virtual Stop contest.

Conor Garrecht-Connelly, 19: selected as a wild card for his 2nd place finish at Vail
Logan Dobson, 16: the Canadian is one of the youngest riders in the field
Cody Buchalter, 18: after reaching the podium at a qualifier in 2011, cracks through with a win this year
Hunter Visser: claimed the last spot with a win at Snowbasin on Wednesday
Hudson Knoll: the other Virtual stop video contest winner

Freeski slopestyle finals kick the weekend off on Friday night, with superpipe finals still to come on Sunday. Check back on gatoradefreeflowtour.com after each event for a full recap.

As the final weekend of events went down, the stakes were at an all-time high for the skiers at the Gatorade Free Flow Tour events at Seven Springs, Pa., Brighton, Utah and Sierra at Tahoe, Calif. With only one last superpipe contest to be held at Snowbasin, Utah on Wednesday, these amateurs were looking for their last shot at earning a spot on the roster that will compete Saturday and Sunday on the Winter Dew Tour courses.

With back-to-back 5th place finishes in Finals, Will Hibbs will be one to watch this weekend at Snowbasin

Out East, Seven Springs held a two-day competition, providing impeccable slopestyle and superpipe venues for the rising stars. The first-year host held a slopestyle competition Saturday, where Will Hibbs earned his third trip to the Gatorade Free Flow Tour Finals in slopestyle, looking to take his place in the circle of Champions. After eight inches of snow fell throughout the day, it took the best riding to Utah for his chance to “Flow to Pro”.

With great freestyle progression coming out of the Brighton park, the only thing more impressive than the ski area itself is the talent that drove up the canyon from SLC to slay the Brighton stop of the Winter Gatorade Free Flow Tour. Over 85 contestants made the trip, but the two sticking around for the Finals are Josh Glen and Kirra Kotsenburg, both hailing from Park City, Utah.

“This is the best competition I’ve ever done,” Glen had to say after his victory. He will make his first trip to the Finals, along with Kotsenburg, who will compete on the same course as her older brother Sage, the 2009-10 Winter Dew Cup Champion.

A warm winter pushed the superpipe contest over to Snowbasin, where challengers for the last two snowboard spots in the Finals will have their opportunity to compete for their place on the professional circuit next winter.

Sierra at Tahoe, a second year host resort, pulled nearly 100 young ams from as far as Russia to compete at the final west coast stop of the Gatorade Free Flow Tour. The course best showcased the skills of Armeen Pirooz, a snowboarder out of Virginia and Mammoth Lake’s Kelly Berger, who will make their way to Utah this week for the Finals, where they’ll compete on the same course as the professionals at the Toyota Championship.

Due to weather conditions, the Gatorade Free Flow Tour superpipe contest scheduled to be held this Sunday at Sierra-at-Tahoe has been cancelled. In its place, we will hold a rail jam that same day at Sierra-at-Tahoe. Winners will not advance to Finals, but prizing will be awarded to the top 3 finishers.

Saturday's slopestyle events at Sierra-at-Tahoe will go on as planned, as will Sunday's junior jam rail jam.

Due to the number of superpipe events being cancelled this weekend, the Gatorade Free Flow Tour has added a new pipe contest to the schedule, to be held Wednesday, February 8th at Snowbasin Resort in Ogden, UT. The contest comes just days before the Winter Dew Tour kicks off at Snowbasin, and competitors will have access to the same pipe that the pros will be competing in. Snowbasin is also the home of the Gatorade Free Flow Tour Finals this year, which will take place from February 10-12. Registration for that event is now available online.

On the East Coast, competitors vying for their shot into the pro circuits took to the slope course at Okemo and the superpipe at Killington, freshly used by the pros at the Winter Dew Tour.

Snowboarders Lauren Tamposi and Jack Dawe earned bragging rights at Okemo, facing tough competition from second and third place finishers Sophie Anderson and Maggie Leon in the women's competition and Eric Cerra and Jed Sky in the men'. Dawe's winning run ended with back-to-back 720s in opposite directions.

Eager to get to Utah, Tamposi was grateful for the opportunity, saying, "Big thanks to Gatorade for putting on this awesome contest!" Expressing similar sentiments, Dawe said, "Today was a super fun day. I’m so psyched Gatorade is sending me to compete with the Dew Tour at Snowbasin!"

Killington held a strong pipe contest Sunday, with contenders coming from all over the northeast and beyond for the contest. Maggie Leon earned her trip to the upcoming Finals with a frontside indy 360, topping Abby Lancour and Sophie Anderson in the pipe, while Dayton's frontside 720 and 540 rounded out with a cork 540 landed him just above Randall Reynolds and thirteen-year-old Austin Rebetz, who finished second and third respectively.

Representing for the mountain, Leon feels comfortable advancing to more of the professional level pipes. "Since this is my home mountain, I felt pretty good about riding in a 22-foot pipe. I'm super psyched Gatorade puts on this contest and is sending me to Utah!"

"This was my first Gatorade Free Flow Tour event, and it was awesome!" said Dayton after his win. "This was a great event – the Gatorade Yowie is sweet – and I had a killer day."

Following a recent record-setting snow, the park at Mt. Bachelor was primed for a heavy slopestyle contest.

What the snowboarders were putting down earned impressive marks from the judges, but at the end of the day local shredder Kent Callister’s run, with a boardslide to fakie at the top, cab 7 indy, switch backside 9 and finished things off with a boardslide 270 out on the cannon rail stole the show. Close behind was Alex Kollar and Ben Ferguson, who completed the podium in second and third. The entire top five were Oregon-bred boarders.

The third weekend of the Gatorade Free Flow Tour hit mountain resorts across the country with slopestyle events at Mount Bachelor and Okemo, plus a superpipe event at Killington Resort. From Oregon to Vermont, the competitors came out gunning for a win and hoping to secure their spot in the Finals. Victories went to Max Heard at Bachelor, while out East, Logan Dobson and Tyler Duncan took the top spots.

Max Heard with a 450 out on a cannon rail. His win put him on the podium for the 2nd time in 2 weeks.

Following a recent record-setting snow, the park at Mt. Bachelor was primed for a heavy contest. After 48 competitors were whittled down to the top ten, the freeskiers gave the judges a show as they rode the course for their trip to the Finals. Claiming the win, British Columbia’s Heard scored big with a slide to 270 out up top, a right seven and left 900 tail on the jumps, and a killer slide to 450 out on the cannon. Throwing it down for second place was Carson Lehouillier, while Chris Verrue took third for the day.

"This made my trip from BC well worth it!" said an excited Heard, a week after taking 3rd at Jackson Hole. "I’m so psyched for Snowbasin."

Tyler Duncan is back in finals, and after placing 3rd overall in 2011, he looks like one of the early favorites.

Over 2,000 miles away on the East Coast, competitors vying for their shot into the pro circuits took to the slope course at Okemo and the superpipe at Killington, freshly used by the pros at the Winter Dew Tour. With nearly fifty competitors in freeski alone, it was up to Tyler Duncan, who used consistency and smooth style to land his spot atop the podium at Okemo. Runner-up Freddy Brideweser, a former Finalist, couldn’t top Duncan’s 450 onto the stairs with a 270 out, blind 450 out of the a-frame, switch-on switch-off the kink rail, a switch cork 720 japan to switch bio 900 safety grab. Rounding out the podium was Erik Lukkari.

"The contest was really fun, and I’m glad the weather was nice," said Duncan Saturday afternoon. "I’m psyched to go to Utah!"

Logan Dobson was named the winner of the weekend's lone superpipe contest.

Killington held a strong pipe contest Sunday, with contenders coming from all over the northeast and beyond for the contest. Freeskiers flocked to the Killington pipe, where Canadian competitor Logan Dobson cleaned up with a first place run, throwing a huge 900 and following it up with a flatspin 540. Earning a close second place was Nick Rosenburger, while Ari Schneider secured a third place finish.

Spanning the country with 42 contests, the Winter Gatorade Free Flow Tour is hitting mountains coast to coast, offering the chance to start your ascension on the path to pro-dom. If you can’t make it out in person, we’ve got you taken care of. The Gatorade Free Flow Tour has partnered with two of the top winter outlets – YoBeat for snowboarding and Newschoolers for freeski – to bring you a video contest where you can upload your best edits for a shot at one of nine wildcards into the Gatorade Free Flow Tour Championships. Held once again in conjunction with the Winter Dew Tour Toyota Championship, it’s your chance to ride the same course and pipe as the pros and take your riding to the next level.

Keeping it simple, the contest requires an original video submission under two minutes in length, from any 13-21 year old rider, guys and girls alike. The contest closes January 31, 2012 and will be judged by YoBeat or Newschoolers, Alli and Gatorade. Judges will base their decision on overall style and board control, variety of tricks and usage of obstacles, technical ability, consistency and amplitude.

The six Grand Prize winners of the Yobeat Virtual Tour Stop Video Contest and three Newschoolers Virtual Tour Stop Video Contest winners will be announced on February 6th, 2012, and each winner will be awarded wildcard entry into the Winter Gatorade Free Flow Tour Finals, taking place February 11-12 at Snowbasin, Utah, along with transportation and accommodations for the event.

Out of the ordinary weather on Saturday forced the contest to be moved to the next day as harsh winds delayed lift operations and wreak havoc on the hill. Sunday we woke up to sunny skies, warm temps, and a recuperated course with the help of the Mt High’s superb park crew.

The men's snowboard slopestyle field featured a solid mix of local and travelling shredders. 16 year old winner Brandon Davis put it down for his run with a backside rodeo 540, cab 900 tail grab, and a backside 720. Davis was a fixture on the tour last year, finsihing on the podium in 2 separate slopestyle events, and winning the superpipe contest at Sierra-at-Tahoe. After travelling to Snowbasin for last year's superpipe finals, where he finished 4th, Brandon has his ticket punched this year for slopestyle. "I can’t wait to get out to Snowbasin and hit that course!" Davis exclaimed after the event.

Marco Gooding came in 2nd after throwing a backside 720 and a cab 540. Mammoth's Spencer Whiting rounded out the podium, landing a frontside 720 and a backside 360 double-grab in his run.

On the lady’s side, 2010 finalist Nirvana Ortanez will be heading back to Snowbasin this year after taking the win in the women's division. Ortanez's run went a little something like this: boardslide on the down box, into a backside 360 melon grab, followed by frontside 180 indy-grab, and then a cab 180 to wrap things up.

“I’m so happy to go to the finals again," Ortanez said. the jumps were really fun today and I’m looking forward to riding the course in the finals.”

Despite weather threatening slopestyle events at both Jackson Hole and Mountain High this weekend, freeski contestants at the Gatorade Free Flow Tour proved nothing could stand in their way of giving their top performance in their quest to move from flow to pro. Out west, it was Noah Wallace who earned the freeski win while in the snowy Tetons, Ian Hamilton held the high score.

After pushing the contest back a day due to rain and high winds, the Mountain High slopestyle contest went off with blue skies and sunshine Sunday morning. The skiers took to the well-tended park, where Wallace stomped a run with a rightside 900, switch left 720 and switch right 900, following stylish domination of the rails. A repeat contestant in the Tour, Wallace will make his first trip from Spokane, Washington to the Finals in Snowbasin, Utah. Coming in second was Chris Verrue, while Alek Hackel snuck into the third place spot.

"I’ve entered a bunch of Gatorade Free Flow comps in the past and always got second or third," an excited Wallace said after his victory run. "I’m so psyched to win today and get the trip to Utah for the Finals!"

Ian Hamilton awaits his turn to drop in

Ian Hamilton earned his second trip to the Finals Sunday, advancing from Jackson Hole. Versatility and constant unseating of the leading amateur made decisions hard for the judges. In the last run of the entire day, Ian Hamilton claimed a well deserved victory over Noah Morrison by laying down a perfect switch left 900 mute-grab, rightside 540 tail-grab, and a textbook 450 onto the downbar. Morrison finished in 2nd, with Max Heard placing 3rd.

A severe weather warning was in effect at Jackson Hole over the weekend, as the home of unrivaled terrain had a foot of snow every night. Still, competitors came out to throw down on the slopestyle course, with a pair of 2010 finalists, Chazz Roberts and Jessika Jenson, winning their respective comps and earning trips back to February's finals.

The guys sacrificed pow laps to get techy in the park. Chazz Roberts stomped his run to claim first place, a trip to Utah and an ice chest full of Gatorade. His run was a super smooth switch 540, huge cab 720, a perfect boardslide on the trap to a switch-270-on, 270-off the downbar. The victory puts Chazz in the finals for the 2nd time in 3 years.

"I had fun and I was also just happy for my friend Corey who took second." -Chazz Roberts

Corey Steinke’s underflip, cab 5 with a full double nose that bent his board, half cab nosepress on the trap to 270 out, to frontside 180 50/50 on the downbar got him 2nd place.

Taking home 3rd place and the final spot on the podium was Brad Tiefenthaler, who landed a switch backside rodeo, backside 540 melon, switch nosepress on the trap to 270 out, to 270 backside lipslide on the downbar.

]]>
Opening the 2012 season with a full field of international competitors, the Gatorade Free Flow Tour returned to Vail Ski Resort for slopestyle and superpipe contests this past weekend. Locking their spot on the Finals roster early in the season, Taylor King topped the slopestyle podium while Ty Wellman took the pipe win on Sunday.

Plenty of eager competitors turned out to compete in the first Gatorade Free Flow Tour contest of the season

Hosting for the third straight year, the Vail participants were hungry as they took to the park Saturday, with great jumps and a creative and progressive rail yard that helped the competitors shine. With super style and deep landings, when the freeskiers took to the course the judges had their work cut out for them. King’s bangers all the way from New Zealand – including a switch left 7 tail to corked switch right 7, followed by a switch left 9 mute and the most corked out blind 6 off the PJ and only misty 4 off the Legacy Feature - made the most of the course, earning his ticket to Utah this February. His closest competitors were second place finisher Erik Lukkari and third place finisher Austen Torvinen.

"It was an outstanding competition," King said of the Gatorade Free Flow Tour. "There were a lot of tricks being thrown down today, but I’m excited to win - this was my first international podium."

Sunday’s freeski halfpipe contest set the bar for the season under sunny skies. Making his Gatorade Free Flow Tour debut, and making it count, was Boyne City, Michigan’s Wellman. Beating out riders from as far as the UK and New Zealand, his run consisted of a switch left 7, right 9 safety to left 9, using the entire pipe and a good portion of the sky above it. Second place went to Conor Garretch-Connely, and third place to Jake Cummings.
